What is Telegram Open Network (TON) and GRAM?
Last year, Telegram announced the upcoming launch of its Blockchain Platform, Telegram Open Network (TON) and its cryptocurrency, GRAM. Launching TON and GRAM will allow Telegram to expand its offerings as a messenger platform to include a payment system.
The primary objective of TON is to create a blockchain platform that can process a high throughput of a million transactions per second, unlike Bitcoin and Ethereum. What this means is that TON’s users will enjoy fast payment transaction speed, just as quickly as Visa or MasterCard. To ensure secure payments, TON will also adopt the Proof-of-Stake consensus algorithm.
Through the TON platform, a Light Wallet will be built in Telegram. Telegram users will be able to pay for applications services (TON Services) with cryptocurrency GRAM.
Telegram currently has over a 200 million active user-base which forms a solid foundation to help drive the mass adoption of GRAM. (Read the TON whitepaper)
TON Blockchain is expected to launch on October 31, 2019.
