Understanding web3 - The Future of the Internet

With the rapid development of technology, we continue to witness many unique innovations which change how humans live their daily lives. Before the internet existed, people communicated over long distances through letters and telephones. With the internet, the ability to communicate over long distances has developed. The Internet has also become a place where people can do many tasks on it, such as finding and spreading information, buying and selling commodities, building a community, and many other things that can help to make a profit.

There are so many technological innovations that have helped humans develop rapidly although there are more innovations and developments to come. This can be seen from the discourse on the development of Web 3.0 for which the internet is able to provide very accurate information and is also adapted to the needs of each user. What are the features of Web 3.0? Let us explain in detail below!

What is Web 3.0?

Before getting into the features of Web 3.0, let’s first understand the meaning behind it. Web 3.0 is the third generation of the worldwide web-based internet that is used by the world community. This concept was first introduced by Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the world wide web, in 2001. In his scientific article, Tim describes Web 3.0 as an innovation where machines can have semantic capabilities that allow them to read entire web pages like how humans read an article. With this capability, the technology will allow humans to communicate more accurately with search engines. You can search for something on the web and get very specific and accurate data without having to go through the websites one by one. Web 3.0 innovation can also provide more relevant information to its users without being asked.

Main Features in Web 3.0

  1. Ubiquity
This feature gives Web 3.0 the ability to be anywhere at the same time in the internet world. This explains how information systems can spread very quickly and can be accessed by anyone. This feature is already owned by the web 2.0 generation, but in Web 3.0, this will be improved by making it easier for someone to access the internet from anywhere and anytime. In other words, at a certain point, internet devices will no longer be centered on computers or smartphones as they are today. Internet of things (IoT) technology will make everything connected to the internet and will produce many new smart device innovations.
  2. Semantic Web
This feature allows Web 3.0 to read and analyze data accurately like a human reading an article. Data that can be analyzed includes content, transactions, and user connections on the internet. With this feature, the engine can read the ’emotions’ in the data content and present a more interesting and relevant experience to its users.
  3. Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a term for the intelligence of a machine. This feature is related to the semantic web features which gives the machine the ability and intelligence to read data and understand emotions found in text on the internet. One useful point about this feature is that AI can be used to distinguish fake product reviews on the internet. For example, Google’s AI recently managed to delete 100,000 negative reviews on the Robinhood application in the Playstore after detecting manipulation aimed at reducing the popularity of this game. With this capability, the machine can provide more filtered and accurate data, thereby minimizing HOAX.

Web 3.0 Characteristics

The characteristics of Web 3.0 will be quite different from Web 2.0 which is currently still driven by cellular phones, social media, and cloud networks. In Web 3.0, the network will be built on three layers of technology, namely edge computing, centralized networks, and artificial intelligence. Web 3.0 will provide a decentralized internet that is more transparent because Web 3.0 is built on blockchain technology and the data will no longer be controlled by a small group of giant companies like Facebook and Google.
